Signs of the times

Another historical museum has opened up in the basement of Abbot Hall, displaying one of the main foundations of Marblehead: local businesses.

For years, the Historical Commission has been working diligently on a Marblehead Sign Museum, where signs of dozens of Marblehead businesses are now on display for community members to take a trip down memory lane.

Every few months since last year, more and more signs have been put on display and the basement halls are now mostly filled with a variety of signs, from circular and square, to wooden and metal, to rusted and shiny.

The museum features old signs of businesses that are still open, like Stowaway Sweets, to a Mobile Gas Station sign, which was the last gas station open in town.

Though many of the signs are up, the work isn’t done just yet. The commission plans to include a written piece for each sign, detailing its history, and

implement a TV with a screen running through each of the signs to make for a more interactive experience.

If you are in possession of any old Marblehead business signs and wish to donate them to the museum, contact the Historical Commission at (781) 639-3425.
