Marblehead resident Tate Walker was working as a cashier at a local shop in 2021, but realized that it wasn’t for him. Walker just loves being outdoors, helping people, making his own schedule, and working for himself too much.
Since then, he began his own successful business doing odd jobs, which include lawn-mowing,
weed-whacking, and power-washing
all over the North Shore, which is in its third summer now.

Walker is currently a student at Providence College studying economics, and knew he had to continue expanding the business when a family friend hired him to power-wash their deck and he loved the experience. He started using his family’s tools, like their lawn mower and weed whacker, but had to buy his own gear due to wear and tear.
“Right now I mow 17 lawns a week,” Walker said.
He talked about a recent day when he had to mow eight lawns in one day, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“It (his family’s lawn mower) doesn’t really cut out for the job, so I had to make an investment in a bunch of gear, but it has all paid off,” he said.
Walker describes himself as someone who is passionate about what he does, a hard worker, and a perfectionist, a trait he said he gets from his dad. He also prefers when there’s a lot going on. He said that he “never says no to a job,” but will be honest with people if he’s never done a certain task before.
“I don’t doubt that I can do it,” Walker said. “And I’ll make sure I do it correctly.”
Walker recalled how at one point, however, he had to tell a client he was helping move that he wouldn’t kill a mouse.
“I was like, ‘No, I’m not going to do that with all due respect, I’m not going to kill a mouse,’” Walker said, adding that it was for moral reasons. “So for the next 20 minutes, I was running around the basement doing my absolute best to catch this mouse. I finally caught it, and so I just picked it up in a container and I brought it out to the woods and just dropped it off.”
According to Walker, the business has successfully expanded through word of mouth and referrals.
“The progression of the business has been insane,” Walker said. “I have been getting nonstop clients, which I am forever grateful for.”
Walker recognizes that summers near the end of one’s college career are typically reserved for internships or anything that will get their “foot in the door.” But with the business’ success, continuing next summer and beyond is not out of the question.
